Born in Melbourne Australia, Simône Serle grew up immersed in the artworld and surrounded by creativity. As the daughter of an artist Simône spent her childhood travelling extensively and living around the world with her family. She has lived in Spain and France; worked in Hong Kong and most recently Vancouver, Canada. It is this transient and dynamic background that has informed her work.
Simône studied painting under her father John Serle, who was a highly accomplished artist and significant influence on Simône and her work. She then went on to graduate Bachelor Arts (Honors) in Interior Design at RMIT.
Simône has worked as an Interior Designer for the last 25 years, both here in Australia and overseas and during this time, she has continued her dedication to her art practice.
Simône is a contemporary abstract expressionist artist exploring the narrative between landscape and the visceral; the kinetic and fixed states of being. Her artwork is primarily oil and acrylic and it evolves through a process of different mediums and how they combine to create forms, textures and images. The artwork almost takes on an aerial perspective, yet it remains firmly abstracted rather than figurative.
Artist's Statement:
My practice centres on the dynamic nature of form and colour, and while I paint, my mind travels between figurative and abstracted – it is almost as though I shift my perspective and blur the lines of focus. I take my inspiration from nature, and as I move through my life, I continually consider textures, abstractions and colours. I use oil, acrylic and water and am fascinated by their relationship to one another. I manipulate these combinations - the clash; the merging; the juxtaposition of their materiality to create various notions of perception. The works are evocative of landscape, yet are not limited to it.
